Your heart-health score, at any age

A risk forecast asks what might go wrong later. This one asks a friendlier question: how good is your heart health right now, and what’s the one thing worth improving?

If a 10- and 30-year risk forecast feels heavy, or if you’re under 30 and the risk calculators won’t take you, here’s the friendlier companion. In 2022 the American Heart Association released Life’s Essential 8: eight things that, together, capture the bulk of your cardiovascular health. Score each from 0 to 100, average them, and you get a single heart-health number with no age limit and mostly no lab required.

The eight are four habits (diet, physical activity, nicotine, and sleep) and four numbers (weight, cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure). The total matters less than the breakdown: it shows which of the eight is dragging you down, so your next move is obvious.

Before you start

This is a convenience version of the AHA’s Life’s Essential 8. For the official assessment, use the AHA’s My Life Check tool. This is an educational estimate, not medical advice. The diet question here is a quick self-report screen, so treat that one component as a rough approximation. If you don’t know your cholesterol, you can skip it and still get a score from the rest.

This tool is for general education and creates no medical or other professional relationship. Never disregard or delay seeking professional medical advice because of a result you see here. You use this information voluntarily and at your own risk, and Hoch Health and Wellness LLC accepts no liability for any loss or harm arising from its use.

Score your eight

It moves one question at a time, and your score with a full breakdown appears at the end.

What your score measures

Each of the eight earns up to 100 points, and your total is their simple average. Here’s the quick logic behind each one.

  1. Diet. A pattern rich in vegetables, fruit, whole grains, fish, and legumes, and light on sugary drinks and ultra-processed food. It’s the hardest to self-score precisely, which is why we keep it a quick screen.
  2. Physical activity. Minutes of moderate-to-vigorous movement per week. The target for full marks is 150; every bit below still counts for something.
  3. Nicotine. Never using scores highest; quitting climbs you back up the ladder the longer it’s been. Vaping counts as current use.
  4. Sleep. Seven to nine hours a night is the sweet spot. Both too little and too much pull the number down.
  5. Weight (BMI). A blunt instrument, but a useful one at the population level. It’s here as one input among eight, not a verdict on its own.
  6. Cholesterol. Non-HDL cholesterol, the harmful fraction. Lower is better, and being on a statin is accounted for.
  7. Blood sugar. Whether you have prediabetes or diabetes, and how well it’s controlled if you do.
  8. Blood pressure. Under 120/80 earns full marks. It’s one of the most trainable numbers on the list.

Notice how many are habits, not fixed traits. Most of your score is built from choices you repeat, and those same choices quietly improve the “numbers” too. If you’re 30 or older and want the flip side of this coin, a forecast of risk rather than a snapshot of health, run the PREVENT risk quiz next.
